Anversa Degli Abruzzi
Abruzzo is one of Italy’s hidden gems. The region is known for its varied topography where you can find amazing beaches, experience the laid-back mountain life, enjoy numerous adventures, and sample the Italian lifestyle in the city of Pescara. Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara, and Teramo may be its most popular destinations, but Anversa degli Abruzzi is another place to consider if you want to explore the historical side of the region. The picturesque village is at the mouth of the Gole del Sagittario canyon, in a medieval fortress, which the Count of Sangro rebuilt in the 15th century.
The village is located at almost 600 metres above sea level, sitting on a spur overlooking Sagittario Gorge. The importance of Anversa Degli Abruzzi lies in its history and natural beauty. It is notable as the setting for Gabriel D’Annunzio’s play, ‘La fiaccola sotto il moggio’. The village is a great base for exploring Oasi Naturale dell Gole del Sagittario, a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) protected area. You can also find an old watermill where the Flora and Fauna Museum is located. Cave della Rena, a 4th century BC necropolis, is nearby. If you are interested in sampling the local fare, the village’s smoked ricotta cheese is not to be missed.
At Anvers a Degli Abruzzi, you can explore more points of interest such as the remains of a medieval citadel, and historic churches like Madonna delle Grazie, which dates back to the 16th century, and San Marcello, which is known for its intricate Gothic door. The village gets busy around January for the feast of San Marcello, which is celebrated on the 16th, with traditional bonfires. Lent is not to be missed with the Good Friday procession. The first Sunday of July is celebrated as the feast day of Madonna delle Grazie. In August, you can witness the celebration of patron saints.
